Since my smoke alarm decided to warn me that it is running out of batteries at about 5 am, I’ve been up for a while this morning. And I just heard a fascinating little story on KERA about a bill in congress cosponsored by Democrat Harkin and Republican McCain that would take the dollar bill out of circulation and replace it with dollar coins. The story went through the pros and cons and focused on the savings we’d get in this country by switching to the coin.
In other words, the bill would catch us up to the 1970s in this country. I suppose it makes sense, but I can’t help but think that it is a bill dealing with a very 20th century problem, not a 21st century problem. Just a few weeks ago, one of our folks had this fascinating encounter with a homeless person in Seattle that sheds light on what our REAL money challenge is.
